The situation at hand: New York Fashion Week starts in only a few days and my feet are already aching from the new 5-inchers I just procured via the Net-A-Porter sale. Thankfully, I work in an office filled with fashion experts, fully at hand to assist in my sartorial troubles.
“Sam,” I say exacerbatedly to our Accessories Director Sam Broekema. “Is there such a thing as a chic flat? Help my feet!”
Here, Broekema dispells of the myth that fashionable flats don’t exist.
If you’re flying solo on this Valentine’s Day, let this be the year you celebrate singledom, because there are so many great things to be said for being in a relationship with the most important person in your life: yourself.
Not to sound all wide-eyed, but your single years can be some of the best you’ll have. Time alone can be well spent focusing on your career, building meaningful relationships with your friends, or traveling the world. And hey, without a significant other to spend your money on, you can treat yourself to that pair of shoes (or three) that you’ve had your eye on.
While most romantic films are mushy and lovey-dovey and the last thing you want to put yourself through on Valentine’s Day (no matter how many glasses of wine you’ve had), there are some rom-coms that truly make you appreciate being by yourself. We’ve rounded up a pretty solid list of movies that celebrate the single life, so if you’re spending this Valentine’s Day sans significant other, we promise these movies will make you value your alone time.
For an up-and-coming musician, the Best New Artist Grammy nomination is a dream come true. Past winners include the likes of Mariah Carey, Alicia Keys, John Legend, Carrie Underwood, and Adele, making this coveted spot an almost telltale sign of success to come. But even when you don’t win the award, it’s really not that bad–just ask Kanye West, Britney Spears, John Mayer, or Taylor Swift.
This year’s nominees include two country singers, two hip-hop artists, and an EDM DJ duo, and many are nominated for multiple awards. We did some Internet sleuthing and Instagram stalking to find out all we could about them, so read below for all the deets. We’ve also put together a Spotify playlist for your listening pleasure, featuring all of our favorite songs by these five artists. We guarantee there are more than a few that will end up stuck in your head. Happy listening!

Can lingerie make you happy? Does it even have the power to do that? Um, YES—at least if Madewell has a say in the matter. Today marks the launch of the Madewell’s first-ever intimates collection that’s as uncomplicated and effortless as its denim. And tees. And outerwear. And basically everything else that the beloved American brand has to offer (which has us wondering: What took so long?).
Stripped free of superfluous frills or over-the-top padding, these easy bralettes and undies are basic, but in the best, chicest way possible—think: darling lace briefs, minimalist bralettes that feature subtle (yet sexy) sheer panels or a tiny central cut-out, and a palette that’s neutral, but not boring (saffron yellow, rich navy, and dove gray).
“The team and I were having trouble finding minimalist bralettes and underwear that were made for everyday. We were looking for pieces that were high quality, uncomplicated and comfortable but still looked good. So we decided to make intimates that filled that void and matched Madewell’s approach to dressing,” says Madewell’s head designer Joyce Lee in a statement. “The collection is a little bit tomboy, a little bit sexy and—above all—feels amazing on. Our ultimate goal is to create pieces that are equally beautiful as they are functional.”
Goal, blissfully achieved. Madewell Intimates (priced between $13 and $32) launches today at madewell.com, all Madewell stores (on Feb. 9, every store will host a launch party from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., where 10 percent of the proceeds purchased from the event will benefit Girls, Inc., a non-profit with the aim to inspire girls). Ruth Negga—on another red carpet, in another stunning look (or, in stylist Karla Welch’s words, a #meganegga look). The star graced the red carpet at the AARP’s 16th Annual Movies for Grownups Awards in an intricately beaded (with hearts and flowers running down each pleat) Valentino creation, complete with Gemfields ruby earrings.
We’ve missed your travel style, Kim! After a several month hiatus, Mrs. West is back in the paparazzi’s airport scope—and WHOA, she looks amazing. The social media star and her brother-in-law, Scott Disick, arrived at LAX on Jan. 11 ahead of their trip to Dubai. Kardashian West sported black track pants and a matching jacket with red piping through the airport, which she complemented with a massive pair of wrap-around shades, lace-up booties, and her 2017 statement piece: the subtle lip ring.
If 2016 had a highlight reel (however brief), Ruth Negga would surely be featured large. The Loving actress made a name for herself as one of the year’s most vibrant breakout stars, both onscreen and on the red carpet, and it’s easy to see why.
The Ethiopian-born beauty embodies the greatest virtues of modern-day Hollywood: unmistakable talent, unique style, and a humble air that makes her seem oh-so approachable.
When it comes to red carpet fashion, Negga has more going for her than a wicked-chic stylist and a mob of luxury designers begging to dress her (though we’re sure those do come with the territory)—in addition to all that, the actress presents herself with such grace and composure everywhere she goes, it’s no wonder that she’s 2016’s reigning It-girl.
Did we mention that she’s humble? At InStyle’s 2017 Golden Globes after-party, Negga gushed to reporters about her custom-made Louis Vuitton gown. “When an artist, a creator, a genius custom-makes something for you, it’s extraordinary,” Negga shared, “It feels like it’s the nicest thing I’ve ever put on my skin. It’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen.” Well said!

Hey, Ruth, let’s be friends—also, can we raid your closet? Here are the actress’s best looks to date. We’re certain this is just the beginning of Negga’s show-stopping red carpet career. Stay tuned…

Monday’s Oscar Nominees Luncheon in Beverly Hills brought out the 2017 class of Academy Award hopefuls. And among the special guests: Natalie Portman and her sizeable baby bump.
Portman, who is expecting her second child with husband Benjamin Millepied, looked poised and radiant in a black Topshop maternity wrap dress and matching Steve Madden slingback flats. The 35-year-old kept things simple in the hair and makeup departments by wearing her brown strands down and loose and little more than a soft pink gloss on her lips.
Already mom to 5-year-old son Aleph, Portman has joked about her stature and the size of her belly in the past. “I’m a small person in general, so you show a lot faster and a lot more when you’re small,” she told Jimmy Fallon in November. “Everyone thinks I’m about to pop and about to give birth any minute!”
Natalie is up for the best lead actress Oscar (for her portrayal of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis in Jackie) along with fellow nominees Isabelle Hupert, Ruth Negga, Emma Stone, and Meryl Streep.

We’ve heard them all: designer names, pronounced in every way imaginable. Obviously, there’s only one correct way to say them; obviously, we’re going to share that with you. We sat down and compiled a list of the most commonly mispronounced names in fashion.
We considered those that some don’t even bother trying to say out loud, like Nicolas Ghesquiere (NEE-koh-la GEHS-kyair), recognizable names that tend to elicit angry pronunciation matches, like Proenza Schouler (pro-EHN-zah SKOOL-er), and the ones that are downright confusing, like Spanish label Loewe (LOH-eh-vay).
